SportBike Chic Protective Jeans

Today I want to talk about Motorcycle riding Jeans.  Over the years I have done articles on the importance of wearing the correct pants when riding a motorcycle. I have talked about the different types of jeans and the pros and cons.  I have always been upfront that some of the products I have talked about I have not had the chance to try myself, but I have done lots of research. One of the reasons I have not tried Motorcycle riding jeans is I am short at only 5’2 and I am, let’s just say a husky girl.   For a woman of my size finding regular jeans that fit let alone riding jeans can be a challenge.  Another reason is most riding jeans that may work for me have to be ordered on-line and that is not always the […]

Lead-Acid vs Lithium Batteries

When it’s time to purchase a new battery for your motorcycle do you wonder which type, size or voltage do I need? How many cold cranking amps do I need? Motorcycle manufacturers provide recommended CCA Ratings for each model they produce. You can check your current battery or the owner’s manual for that information. There’s a lot to be said about the lead-acid battery as they have been around a long time and are known for their reliability and affordability. But what if I told you a Lithium based battery is an option? I’m sure you would have many questions. Of course, when you think of lithium-ion batteries you may have heard stories of the batteries catching fire. These types of batteries are typically found in small electronic devices such as cell phones and laptops. Although somewhat new to the […]

Staying Hydrated on the Road

It’s a hot summer day, the sun is brilliant without a cloud in the sky. It’s hot and humid and you have places to go. I’ve heard stories from bikers about “that one time I almost passed out” or when they got off the bike and had to sit down because their head was swimming. Dehydration and heat stroke are no joke, they can lead to brain damage and even death. Risk of death from heat stroke is 60% higher when non exercise induced. Even mild dehydration manifests in ways that are dangerous on the road. Less mental acuity, slowed reactions, increased fatigue and grumpiness. Riding should be fun and safe! By the time you notice these symptoms, it's already too late and you will need to break for a while until your rehydrated. Staying hydrated is important, and even […]

Independence Day – Celebrating our Freedom

Independence Day in the United States of America is a long celebrated day dating back to the 18th century. On July 2nd 1776, the Continental Congress voted in favor of Independence and on July 4th, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was adopted. The Declaration of Independence set out the ideals and principles of a just and fair government. It was the Constitution which set forth the rules by which this fair and just government would function. It was the American Revolution which brought about this independence, the blood and sweat of our people who paved the way to freedom. While we often talk about fireworks and BBQ's for July 4th, we don't often talk about the men and women that paid the price for our freedom almost 250 years ago or the men and women who continue to guarantee that […]

Fourth of July – Fireworks Safety!!!

On this Independence Day some of us are out enjoying our families, cookouts, and Fireworks!!   I just ask that if you are going to enjoy fireworks please do so safely.  Ideally, you should leave fireworks up to the professionals and just go enjoy a public show. If you do this, you still need to take some precautions. 1.  stay a safe distance from where they are lighting the fireworks off.  2. If you have small children or anyone with ear issues please make sure they have ear protection.  Fireworks are loud and they will not enjoy the show if they are in pain from their ears.  3. Please leave Animals at home, unless they are trained to deal with loud noises and flashing lights.  Most animals do not understand what is happening and they get scared. (Even at home, please […]

Edge Eyewear Style Mayon

At Nationals our Vice President was telling me about these new clear glasses she bought. They seem great. They wrap around the face and are comfortable and stylist. The Problem was when she wore them home one evening. She said everything doubled, the headlights, lines on the road, and street lights. She couldn’t see where she was in the lane. So she gave them to me to look at. During the day they are great. They are comfortable but at night I saw triple of all the lights. I asked two other sisters to try them and they also had this happen. Please DO NOT BUY OR WEAR: Edge Eyewear style Mayon HM411AR 1626. They are suppose to be anti-reflective. Here is pictures so you can see what they look like. Please DO NOT BUY THESE!

Child Safety – A Change in Strategy

Remember when we were young and our parents said "Don't talk to strangers!" or hearing the saying "Stranger Danger!"? Back then, scare tactics like this were considered the best way to keep us kids away from danger. If you never talked to strangers, predators could not get to you. Times are changing though, what worked 30 years ago doesn't work as well today. Society has changed and right along with it… the dangers it poses to our children have also changed. So let's update on some of the best ways to help your kids keep safe. Not every child abduction can be prevented; abductors are larger and stronger than their victims and are often clever. There are, however, ways to help keep your child safer. Here are seven tips to ensure safer practices with your children 1. Don't teach "Stranger Danger!" […]

First Things First

By: James R. Davis You are trained and competent at both CPR and First Aid and you come upon a scene that obviously requires you to perform one or both of these services. What is the FIRST thing that you should do? At a recent monthly meeting of the Houston chapter of the Lone Star Ladies there was a discussion of this topic that left me very uncomfortable. The reason for this is that I heard suggestions that ranged from "Start CPR immediately" to "Make sure the victim can breath." I, on the other hand, suggested that the very first thing that should be done is to arrange to have 911 called. The members unanimously found fault with that suggestion. While I understand their desire and goodwill in the matter, I think it is important to think this through a […]
